Your life is boring* **

*Maybe **It doesn't have to be though

Exact numbers are unavailable for obvious reasons, but it’s estimated that throughout the human history there have been around:

  • 500 000 movies filmed

  • 1 000 000 TV shows filmed

  • 85 000 comic book titles created

  • 150 000 000 fiction books written

What does a good movie, TV show, book, and comic book have in common?

Good story.

You can’t make a good any of those without one.

So we see a pattern there. And what do we do when we see a pattern?

Extrapolate.

What are we going to extrapolate this particular pattern onto?

Travelling of course.

Has it ever happened to you:

You are planning a big and cool trip.

You are super excited about it.

You jump into it…

And it’s just…

Meh.

You came to the place. You saw the place. Yeah, it’s nice. Maybe you did some touristic shit adventure activities. Tasted local food. Met a couple local people. But at the end of the day, it’s far from as cool and crazy as it was in yout head.

I’ve been there. I almost got disappointed in travelling. Thought it was overrated.

And right after that I accidentally got in the best adventure of my life.

Without getting into details, the main thing that separated it from my previous travellings was… You guessed it.

It had a good story.

The beginnig. The middle. The end.

Setup. Conflict. Resolution.

The beginning

A good trip… No, a good adventure starts not from a quetion ‘Where‘, or ‘When’, or ‘What to do‘.

It starts from Why.

Why you need to jump into it. Why you have to jump into it.

In other words, the adventure must have a goal. It is the setup, the beginning.

There are 3 criteria for a good goal:

  • Specificity

  • Difficulty

  • Stakes

You need to accomplish something specific. If it’s too generic - you probably can do it from your home, or ask someone else to do so.

Difficulty gets us to the second part:

The middle

If it was easy – you would do it in a minute and it woudn’t be an adventure.

No, it’s hard. You are struggling. Maybe even changing. The harder it is - the better story you have at the end.

Imagine Avengers defeating Thanos in the Infinity War. Just another superhero movie.

Nah, they had to loose first. Because defeating Thanos is damn hard. And that’s why the Endgame is such a powerful…

End

(pun intended)

What happens if you don’t achieve the goal(stakes)?

What do you get if you do?

Did you?

We figure it all out in the end, in the resolution.

The beginnig. The middle. The end.

Setup. Conflict. Resolution.

Goal. Struggle. Win.

When you are going on an adventure, you need to have a quest.

When you are going back, you will have a story.

By the way. I wrote about all that and much more in my free Guide on living an adventurous life.
